David Stell- Owner of the Coryton Arms
When I took on the Coryton Arms in St Mellion, I knew it was more than just a renovation project. The building, a Grade II listed pub with roots stretching back to the 19th century — and possibly much earlier — has long been part of the village’s fabric. For years, it was where people gathered for a drink, a meal, or just a chat at the bar. When it closed in 2019, the loss was felt across the community.

As a surgeon by trade, I’m no stranger to repair work — though this has been quite a different challenge. The building had fallen into disrepair and needed careful restoration to bring it back to life while preserving its history. We’ve focused on sustainable materials, using locally sourced oak from the docklands and keeping as many of the original features as possible, including the freshwater well.

The Coryton Arms has now reopened as a family-run pub that reflects both its heritage and the best of modern Cornwall with fresh local food, ale, and spirits.
